Kochi gears up for Messi magic: ₹70-crore stadium revamp ahead of Argentina friendlies

Kochi’s Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium is undergoing a major transformation ahead of Argentina football team’s much-awaited friendly matches in Kerala. The iconic venue is being renovated at an estimated cost of ₹70 crore, bringing it up to FIFA international standards, said Reporter Broadcasting Company MD Anto Augustine.

The renovation aims not only to host the upcoming Argentina friendlies but also to make the stadium capable of hosting future FIFA events. Once completed, the upgraded facility will feature a 50,000-seat capacity, brand-new VVIP galleries, and a state-of-the-art pavilion. Structural reinforcements, including a stronger ceiling and enhanced spectator facilities are also part of the project.

The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has given the right to do the renovation, and work is progressing rapidly. Addressing speculations about ticket pricing, Anto Augustine urged fans to ignore unverified reports, assuring that official announcements will soon be made by the government.

Meanwhile, a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was held in Thiruvananthapuram to assess ongoing preparations and assign key responsibilities for what promises to be one of Kerala’s grandest sporting events. The meeting was attended by Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman, Industries Minister P. Rajeev, the DGP, and the Chief Secretary, among other senior officials.

During the session, the Chief Minister instructed officials to complete all stadium-related works on priority and ensure comprehensive security, smooth logistics, and crowd management. The meeting also discussed the possibility of a public fan meet, offering Kerala’s passionate football fans a chance to celebrate the arrival of Lionel Messi and the World Cup champions.
